Advertising-supported software or adware for short is simply a software package that automatically plays, displays or downloads advertisements to a computer right after installation. Advertising functions are incorporated into the software, which then lists the sites the user is visiting. And later on displays advertising pertaining to what products are offered from the visited sites.
In the developer’s point of view, adware is a way to recover development cost, and in rare cases the software is to be given to the user free of charge. The developer then profits from presenting advertising to the users, which will later on push him to develop further version of the adware product.
On the other hand, adware, as seen by some users, is an unnecessary interruption or annoyance. Instant pop ups may distract them from doing the task at hand. It really is annoying when you are in the middle of doing something very important and then pops an unwanted advertisement. Sometimes it wastes a lot of time closing these ads.
Some adware can slow your PC by using RAM and CPU cycles. Your internet connection may also be affected as the adware uses your bandwidth to retrieve advertisements from respective websites. Poorly programmed adware can increase the instability of your system.
Adware is a close relative of spyware. Spyware is software which is secretly installed to your computer to spy on your activities and report this data to people who are willing to pay for it. The purpose behind is to send the said data to advertisers for them to know what probable type of product you are going to buy.
But not all adware is bad. There are, in fact, many programs that are distributed for free because the ads being displayed are payment for the development. Examples of such adware are the opera browser and the KaZaA peer-to-peer file sharing client.
Keep in mind that good adware only installs itself on your system if you permit it to do so. Bad adware on the other hand, never needs your permission and installs by itself. Good adware allows you to uninstall it whenever you like through the “add and remove programs” button. Bad adware, however, will give you a hard time uninstalling it, and mostly impossible.
A good adware always displays inconspicuous ads inside the software it comes packaged with, wherein bad adware not only installs itself, but hijacks the settings of your browser to show more irritating ads.
Be aware though that when you are removing adware, some shareware programs that you installed may stop to function. Authors who develop these shareware are often paid to incorporate these adware packages with their software.
If you suspect that your computer is infected with a bad adware, then you have to download a high quality adware and spyware scan and removal tool. There are various versions and brands out in the market, some are free and some require payment, whatever you choose, just make sure that you get the irritating adware out of your system.
